FAMU Addressing Issues Outlined in NCAA Infraction Report

Earlier today, the NCAA released an Infraction Report regarding FAMU on its website.

The University's statement is below and posted on its website, along with a list of frequently asked questions: https://bit.ly/2HCSZko.

For Immediate Release

May 21, 2019

NCAA Announces Penalties on FAMU for Infractions

Today, the NCAA released its public infractions report detailing specific infractions by Florida A&M University Athletics and associated penalties:

• From 2010-2011 through 2016-2017, a series of errors resulted in the participation of student-athletes who were not eligible to compete in several sports. However, these ineligibility infractions did not involve unethical behavior but were primarily the result of administrative issues.

• Based upon the findings, FAMU has self-imposed penalties including post-season bans for the 2019-2020 academic year, recruiting and scholarship reductions and the vacation of records of any seasons of competition that had student-athletes compete while ineligible.

• These self-imposed penalties were necessary to demonstrate our accountability and commitment to doing things the right way.

• Many of the infractions from the data review overlap with the time period of the 2010-2014 NCAA violations.

For the past 18 months, FAMU has been working to address these issues.

“While we cannot change the circumstances of the past, we have accepted full responsibility for the infractions and are committed to running an athletic program that is in full compliance with NCAA rules and regulation,” said FAMU President Larry Robinson, Ph.D.

He added, “Rest assured, we have taken significant steps to address these issues and reduce the likelihood of recurrence. We will meet and exceed the NCAA’s expectations to ensure that FAMU Athletics remains in compliance with its standards.”

The University has adopted an approach that has institutionalized the measures that have been taken to establish a new era of compliance in our programs and have made significant investments in creating an infrastructure within and outside athletics. The new processes implement collaboration among Athletics, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and FAMU’s compliance and ethics officer in order to operate this program in a manner conducive to its future success.

FAMU has taken action to codify and strengthen its policies and procedures to enable continuity – and institutional oversight – of the University’s athletics department when turnover occurs. This includes establishing and onboarding a highly competent compliance staff within Athletics and with additional oversight from the University’s compliance and ethics program. Additionally, in early 2018, an Athletic Oversight Task Force was formulated, composed of high-level administrators and other appropriate departmental representatives to foster a University-wide understanding and commitment to Athletics. The University has also made significant improvements by implementing a sustainable plan for continued compliance in Athletics and looks forward to further advancing the culture of compliance at the University.

“It’s a new day in FAMU Athletics. We are certain that with all we are doing and the commitment of Athletics and the University, we are continuing to build a program that Rattlers and supporters will be proud of. We look forward to your continued support of your favorite athletics program and believe there is a bright future ahead for FAMU Athletics,” said FAMU Director of Athletics John Eason, Ph.D.

Although the University agrees with the non-financial penalties, FAMU will consider its option to appeal the NCAA’s financial penalties.

President Robinson's Message - Thank you to Alumni for Supporting the University

Dear Rattlers,

As we prepare for the 2018-2019 academic year and welcome the Class of 2022 (FAMU22) to campus, it is important to pause and give thanks to all who contributed to the well-being of Florida A&M University during the 2017-2018 academic year. Our Board of Trustees, faculty, students, staff, friends, elected officials and, of course, dynamic alumni gave so much of themselves to ensure that FAMU22 could find their way to the Eternal Flame and continue our legacy of success, as demonstrated by the Rattlers who came before them over the past 130 years.

These new Rattlers will pave their own path, but like so many alumni today, their hearts and souls will never venture far from the "College of Love and Charity." They will be molded into scholars by outstanding faculty and exceed our student success expectations. They will be embraced and nurtured by staff and transformed into active participants in the full college experience.

FAMU22 will find role models in Rattlers like the committed members of the FAMU National Alumni Association and University boards who "showed up" in support of advancing our institutional mission at the recent Florida Board of Governors meeting in Orlando.

When their time comes, FAMU22 will articulate the importance of our strategic plan, “FAMU Rising,” in just as clear and concise terms as each of you do when you so passionately tell the story of FAMU while advocating for the funding and support needed to ensure continued progress for the benefit of Florida and the nation. We have a lot to be thankful for and even more to look forward to in the future.

Yours in Service,
Dear Rattlers,

We need your assistance contacting our U.S. Representatives. Please call their Washington, D.C. and local congressional offices and ask them to oppose provisions in the House Bill relating to the Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. According to the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, these provisions "would needlessly drive up student debt" and "make college less affordable," making this bill detrimental to HBCUs. Please contact your U.S. Representatives and ask them to oppose the bill. For your reference are links below with talking points prepared by Congressman Bobby Scott and a list of Florida's U.S. Congressional delegation.

Thank you for all you do on behalf of our beloved FAMU. Go Rattlers!!!
