FAMU National Alumni Association Announces Fun Events, Scholarship Opportunities During 5th Quarter Classic in Mobile, Al.

(Mobile, Al. September 8) For the first time in 20 years, Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Tuskegee University will meet on the gridiron in Mobile, Al. to rekindle a 108-year rivalry. The 5th Quarter Classic football game will kick off Saturday, September 17, and there is plenty to do before and after the big game.

On game day, the FAMU National Alumni Association (FAMU NAA) and Tuskegee alumni will enjoy a friendly Unity Tailgate from 2-5 p.m. in an air-conditioned tent at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children. Purchase tickets at famunaa.org or tuskegeenationalalumni.org. Proceeds benefit the FAMU NAA.

On Thursday, September 15, FAMU representatives will present scholarship opportunities to Mobile area students during the FAMU Scholarship and Recruitment Program at Revelation Missionary Baptist Church at 7 p.m. During the event, the FAMU NAA will host students who are residents of St. Mary’s Home, the oldest foster care agency in Alabama and one of the oldest in the country.

To help St. Mary’s Home, the FAMU NAA will collect items such as shirts, pants, underwear, hair products, shoes, etc. for their “Room in your Heart, Room in your Bag” Campaign. Items can be turned in at the official host hotel, The Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel and Spa, and during the Unity Tailgate on Saturday. You can also make a online monetary donation by clicking here.

FAMU NAA President Gregory L. Clark said, “This Classic displays the greatest of both Florida A&M University and Tuskegee University. We are excited to show Mobile and the Gulf Coast what we are all about. I am also excited about this game because my family ties run deep between both institutions.”

On Friday, September 16, the FAMU NAA Party will feature DJ Neaux of Atlanta from 9 p.m. – 2 a.m. at Grand Central. Proceeds benefit the FAMU NAA.

On Saturday at 10 p.m., the FAMU NAA Gulf Coast Chapter will host the post-game celebration fundraiser, featuring Erica Washington, in conjunction with the Pensacola FAMU Alumni Chapter. After the game, there will be a Battle of the Bands featuring the incomparable FAMU Marching 100 and the Marching Crimson Piper Band of Tuskegee.

Charlotte Merritt, president of the FAMU NAA Gulf Coast Chapter, said the Classic will help raise awareness about Historically Black Colleges and Universities and their history.

Planning Classic events also spurred excitement that boosted the chapter’s membership roster in a matter of months. Merritt encouraged everyone to buy tickets for the game and the Unity Tailgate now. A limited number of tickets for the tailgate will be available on the day of the game.

“I invite everyone to come and experience the game and excitement with their friends, family, and kids. The tailgate is about unity, family, and getting prepared for the big game – the 5th Quarter Classic!”

The Southwest Georgia FAMU NAA Chapter will be sponsoring a charter bus to take more Rattlers and Tigers to the game. The price of $100 includes transportation to and from the game, ticket to the game, and a T-shirt. The bus is scheduled to leave from the Albany Mall at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and return immediately after the game. For more information, contact Southwest Georgia FAMU NAA Chapter President, Nedra Forston, at (770) 330-8496.

FAMU National Alumni Association President, Gregory L. Clark, Addresses The FAMU Board of Trustees’ Decision Not To Renew President Mangum’s Contract

On August 24, the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Board of Trustees voted not to renew the contract of the university’s 11th president, Dr. Elmira Mangum. The FAMU National Alumni Association (FAMU NAA) is keenly aware that a shift of this magnitude in leadership profoundly impacts the university’s efforts to move FAMU forward. Therefore, as the FAMU NAA President, I am urging our alumni to remain committed and focused on the core element of our mission – our students.

I am proud to report, earlier this year, the FAMU NAA exceeded its fundraising goals for the Save Our Students Retention Scholarship Fund. This allowed the NAA to award more than $230,000 in scholarships to 325 students to assist them in their efforts to graduate or register for classes this fall.

I welcome your input and solutions on ways to support the university during this transition. In the meantime, please help keep our legacy strong and contribute to the S.O.S. Retention Scholarship Fund through the FAMU Foundation’s online portal. If you are not a member of the FAMU NAA, join the FAMUly today by visiting http://famunaa.org/v2/membership/. Despite challenges and budget constraints, faculty, staff, and students continue to make us proud and live up to the university’s motto, “Excellence With Caring.” While the FAMU Board of Trustees handles its job, let us remain strong in our allegiance towards assisting our beloved alma mater.
